My dearest friend is expecting and we recently celebrated the occasion with a baby shower. It was great fun both planning and hosting the shower! Since travel is the décor of the nursery, I used that theme for the shower, noting the baby as “precious cargo.” I designed an airplane diaper cake, complete with a teddy bear pilot! Our guest book consisted of vintage postcards from around the world, on which each guest could write a special message to the expecting couple.
In an effort to allow friends to mingle, visit, and set their own party agenda, several of the games were designed to be completed at any time during the shower. Here are a few games that were a lot of fun!
- The onesie game – Each guest is asked to bring a onesie. Upon arrival, a numbered stickie is put on the onesie and it is placed in a large basket. Later in the shower, the onesies are hung up on a clothesline. “Dad” makes the first attempt at guessing which guest brought each onesie. This is harder than it sounds! After identifying which onesies were mismatched, “Mom” tries her hand at the game. Eventually hints from the guests are needed! Great fun and lots of onesies for baby!
- Complete the nursery rhyme game – The first few lines of fifteen nursery rhymes are printed out on paper. At their leisure, guests complete the next line of each entry and submit their paper with as many completed nursery rhymes as possible. No group work allowed! During the gift opening, the individual completing the most nursery rhymes correctly is announced and receives a small prize. I used Starbucks gift certificates…loved by all!
- Paper airplane challenge – Keeping with the shower theme of travel, guests design their own paper airplane and test its flying capability. A booklet with a few airplane model designs is provided, but guests are allowed to create their own design as well. Once designed, guests’ airplanes must fly through a large ring. Each guest measures how far they are standing from the ring when the airplane sails through. This distance is recorded and a prize is awarded at the end of the shower for the greatest distance from the ring. This gets the creative juices flowing!
- Gift-opening bingo – Every guest gets an empty bingo card and fills in each square with a name of a possible baby gift. No checking the baby gift registry on your phone! Encourage guests to not repeat entries. As gifts are opened by the couple, guests check the item off their bingo card, assuming that particular gift is on the bingo card. As individuals get “bingo,” prizes are handed out. To keep your guests engaged in the game, have several prizes so they can keep playing after the first bingo.
