It is getting to be the time of year when moms and babies experience “cabin fever.” New moms are often concerned with taking baby out in the cold, however, being outdoors helps babies acclimate to the seasons and the day-night cycle. This can lead to better sleeping for baby! When I was a baby we lived in Chicago and we had serious winters. My mom tells me I loved being outside, for a short period of time, during the winter. Funny, now I hate northern winters!!
Newborns and babies cannot self-regulate their core temperature, thus losing body heat faster than adults. Babies are not able to warm themselves by shivering and do not have enough body fat to warm up once they are cold.
With a few cold weather tips, you and baby can enjoy some outdoor time.
- Dress baby in layers – Just like you, dressing baby in layers allows for taking clothes off as needed to make baby comfortable. The first layer should be snug to the body, such as leggings, long underwear, or a bodysuit. The second layer consists of long pants and a long sleeve shirt. Add a jacket, hat, mittens, and warm booties and you are ready to go! The general rule of thumb is to dress baby in one more layer than you are wearing.
- Out for a stroll – If taking a quick walk around the block, a stroller blanket or bunting works perfectly. Tuck the blanket under baby’s armpits. Putting a blanket entirely over baby or over the top of the stroller may cause baby to overheat.
- Taking a drive – If going for a ride, cover baby with a blanket or coat. Baby should not wear a coat in the car, since too much fluffy material between baby and the car seat straps can be dangerous in the event of an accident. The material may compress upon impact, allowing for a gap to exist between baby and the restraints.
