We have had several of our First Reflections babies in recently for their 4-month or 8-month photo shoots. I am always amazed at how much they grow from their newborn to their 4-month and to their 8- month visits. My studio moms tell me that they know when the growth spurts are happening. It seems that growth can take its toll on both mom and baby!
Although every baby is different, growth spurts are especially common at about 10 days, between three and six weeks, three months, six months, and nine months. Growth can occur quickly, with some studies reporting measurable weight and length gains in just 24 hours!
Babies grow much faster in their first year of life than at any other time. If baby is experiencing the following signs, it just might be a growth spurt.
- Increased appetite – Just when you think that you are on a regular feeding schedule, baby is feeding much more frequently than usual, sometimes around the clock. These additional calories are being used for growth – building fat cell reserves, developing muscle, and, with the help of hormones, actually changing the physical structure of bones.
- Sleepy baby – Sleep is an important component of the growth process. Growth hormones, responsible for bone growth, are actually produced during sleep. So the adage of “let sleeping babies lie” is quite appropriate. During the few days of a growth spurt, it is best not to wake baby for feeding.
- Cranky or fussy – A combination of increased hunger and tiredness may lead baby to be more irritable than normal. A little bit of extra comforting and soothing may be needed during baby’s growth spurt.
