We try to schedule baby photo shoots around pediatrician visits, since baby is generally fussy after receiving shots. With several well-care check-ups in the first year, not to mention the sick visits, selecting a pediatrician is a serious task.
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends selecting a pediatrician during your third trimester of pregnancy. It is essential to identify a pediatrician who is not only competent, but with whom you are comfortable asking questions and taking advice. The suggestions below will help you in your search process.
- Ask around – One of your first steps in developing your pediatrician list is to ask friends and family for recommendations. You can also check with your ob-gyn or primary care doctor for their suggestions. Consider office location, hours and after-hours care, if your insurance is accepted, and if they are taking on new patients. This may help in shortening your initial list.
- Do your homework – Be sure that your candidates have been trained in pediatrics or family medicine. Board certification by the American Board of Pediatrics or the American Board of Family Medicine demonstrates a solid knowledge base. You may also want to consider their range of experience – private practice, group practice, urgent care, hospitals – as a reflection of the breadth of knowledge base.
- Schedule face-to-face meetings – Most pediatricians offer free “getting-to-know-you visits.” This is your opportunity to meet the doctor, ask questions, and determine their style and philosophy of care. This meeting should greatly help you in selecting the pediatrician who will be your partner and advisor in caring for your baby.
- Be observant – Watch how your pediatrician interacts with your newborn during your first few visits. Does s/he seem genuinely interested in your baby? Are your questions adequately answered? Does the pediatrician allow sufficient time for your visit? Answers to these types of questions will ensure that this is a good fit for you and baby.
If over time you begin to feel uncomfortable with the pediatrician you selected, don’t hesitate to move onto a different one. It is important to trust your pediatrician in caring for your baby.
