As we move into August, you may want to take advantage of the last month of summer to take baby to the beach. We use the beach set during many baby and toddler in-studio photo sessions, and they are so much fun! My studio moms seem to really enjoy taking their little ones to the “real beach!”
Taking baby to the beach can be a fun time. The following tips will keep baby comfortable and make for
a great day at the beach!
- Arrive Early or Late – To avoid the strongest of UV rays, plan to head to the beach early in the morning or later in the afternoon. These times may also coincide with baby’s naptime – heading home in time for the late-morning nap or heading to the beach right after the afternoon nap.
- Sunscreen, of course – To protect baby’s delicate skin, sunscreen is essential. However, it is recommended that sunscreen not be used on babies younger than six months of age. Dressing baby in a lightweight, breathable long sleeve top and pants, along with a large brimmed hat, will protect sensitive skin. For older babies and toddlers, applying sunscreen to their naked body avoids missing any spots and potential exposure to damaging rays. A SPF of at least 30 is recommended.
- Tent or Umbrella – Create a shade fortress, with either an umbrella or tent, to shield baby from UV rays. Additionally, a well-ventilated tent protects baby from wind, sand, noise, and creates some privacy for nursing baby.
- Baby Carrier – Young walkers and strollers both have difficulty navigating sand. A much better option is a carrier, which also protects baby from the wind. Be sure that the carrier is breathable, so baby remains cool.
- Sand-Proof Snacks – If baby is eating finger foods, be sure to pack items that are sand-proof. Squeeze pouches of applesauce and yogurt, as well as fruits that can be rinsed off (grapes, blueberries), are good options. Cut sandwiches into small pieces, so if dropped in the sand, the entire sandwich is not lost!
- Hydrate – Considering that it will be a warm day, baby must be kept hydrated. You may need to nurse baby more frequently, which means you must be certain to keep yourself hydrated. If baby is old enough to drink water, keep some on hand in your cooler.
Relax and take in your baby discovering new sights, sounds, and textures!
