One of my favorite newborn sets is the water backdrop with baby sporting sunglasses and relaxing in an innertube. They just look so cute! This set also reminds me of swimming, which is not one of my strengths. As hard as my mom tried and as many swimming lessons that I took, you would think that I would be an Olympic swimmer. In reality, I still can’t swim!
Here are a few tips on helping baby get used to water and prep for a future of swimming.
- Start in the bathtub – Bath time can be fun time! Getting wet, splashing arms and legs, having water on the face, and just getting comfortable in the water are all key steps in prepping for future swimming lessons. I am told I did great in the bathtub, just not so great in the swimming pool!
- Mommy/Daddy-and-me swimming classes – These programs are usually for children ages 6 to 36 months. In the comfort of mommy’s or daddy’s arms, little ones develop motor skills needed to swim. Supported by mommy’s or daddy’s arm, they learn to float on their back and tummy. These classes are fun and relaxed, using play to learn. I rocked all the mommy/me classes!
- Solo swimming classes – Generally, 3-4-year olds can begin to take swimming classes on their own. These may be private or group lessons, but will be without mommy/daddy involvement. Depending on the instructor, students may use floaties or kick boards to further develop theirswimming ability. I took these swimming lessons for years!
