Should children return to school this fall? Is it physically safe? What is the social and mental toll on children if they don’t return? As with any COVID-19 issue, there are lots of opinions on both sides. It certainly is a daunting decision for parents to make.
I generally try and educate myself when I face uncertain decisions. In doing so, I found the following three resources to be quite informative. I share them with you, hoping they can help you in your back to school decisions.
The American Medical Association (AMA) considers how physicians can help parents in making the back to school decision. The article addresses considering the available information, realizing that it is a judgment call, and being realistic about precautionary measures. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shares a Back to School Decision Making Tool for parents. The questions in the general Back to School section of the Tool allow parents to assess their views regarding how their school is preparing for the upcoming school year. The Virtual/At-Home Learning Feasibility section helps parent to determine if virtual learning is feasible for you and your child. The School-Based Services section reviews school-based services that your family may be using. Professionals from Atrium Health provide advice for parents regarding back to school. A pediatric infectious disease specialist and a pediatrician, both from Levine Children’s, and a child psychiatrist provide answers to questions that are on all of our minds.
