When we were younger, my sisters and I received a number of educational gifts for Christmas, with our favorite being books. As you are getting into the gift shopping mode, perhaps you would like to consider one of the books selected as a winner in the 2021 New York Times/New York Public Library Best Illustrated Children’s Books. This is an annual event, occurring since 1952, in which three expert judges review every illustrated children’s book published within that particular year. The books are reviewed
purely on artistic merit.
I share with you my three favorite winners from 2021. Hope you and your child enjoy both the story and the illustrations of these books.
- I am the Subway written and illustrated by Kim Hyo-eun – Through the use of watercolor, the subway train describes it life and transforms its riders from strangers into individuals with unique lives. (Appropriate for ages 3 to 10)
- The Night Walk written and illustrated by Marie Dorleans – Creatively using light to explore the nocturnal activities of animal families, these graphite illustrations capture the beauty of family. (Appropriate for ages 4 to 8)
- Keeping the City Going written and illustrated by Brian Floca – A tribute to the essential workers who kept New York City running during Covid-19, the soft watercolors reflect their quiet heroism. (Appropriate for ages 4 to 8)
