I truly enjoy working with all my expecting families during maternity photo sessions, as well as capturing the beauty of babies in our newborn sessions. These are some of my favorite photo shoots!
I have had some interesting conversations lately regarding the journey that some of my studio families have taken to get pregnant and carry to term. In exploring this topic, infertility is much more common that we may think. The National Infertility Association estimates that 10% to 15% of couples have infertility concerns.
Contrary to popular thinking, infertility affects both men and women. In about one-third of infertility cases, the issue is with the male; in about one-third of cases, the issue is with the female; and in about one-third of cases, the issue lies with both the male and the female. Infertility increases with age – over 35 for women and over 40 for men. Although age is the top risk factor, certain disorders (e.g., endometriosis), cancer (radiation and chemotherapy), tobacco use, alcohol use, being overweight, and in some cases, being underweight (e.g., anorexia) may contribute to infertility.
National Infertility Awareness Week (NIAW), generally the last week of April, is designed to raise public knowledge about infertility. The NIAW is changing the national conversation around infertility by striving to minimize misunderstanding and stigma among the general public, educating those experiencing infertility on seeking treatment, and informing those at risk of experiencing infertility on preventive measures.
Please, share your thoughts.
