Welcome back to Talking Tails!
Take a walk this week to support National Walk Your Dog Week. We are ready for a walk at any time! Established in 2010 by Colleen Paige, a pet lifestyle expert and animal behaviorist, National Walk Your Dog Week promotes health and wellness for dogs and their owners.
We were shocked to discover that about 40% of dogs are overweight. We have the opposite problem, particularly Buster. He weighs the same, down to the tenth of a pound, year after year. That is just crazy! Being overweight can lead to health issues for our furry friends – chronic inflammation, orthopedic disease, limited mobility, diminished quality of life, and reduced life expectancy. None of these sound very pleasant to us.
Taking a 30-minute walk daily, or at least a few times a week, can help in losing or maintaining weight. A walk also lowers blood pressure, boosts the immune system, and releases endorphins (happy chemicals). As an added bonus, exercise can reduce behavioral issues – barking, chewing, aggression. Besides, what dog would not like to regularly get outside, experience new environments and smells, socialize with dogs and humans enroute, and bond with their human? We absolutely love taking a walk. When mom brings out our leashes, Joey gets super excited. He jumps so much that sometimes it’s hard for mom to put on his leash. Then once the leash is actually on, he tries to walk himself! With the leash in his mouth, he starts prancing. At times, he gets Buster’s leash in his mouth and tries to take him for a walk! Once we pull ourselves together, mom takes us out of the house. We have a great time on our walks and come home tired, but happy!
By the way, taking us for a walk can also be good for you. Did you know that one-third of adults are obese?
Talk to you soon!
