Welcome back to Talking Tails!
Did you know that dogs can suffer from depression? It comes as a surprise to me because I am just a happy-sort-of-guy.
Depression can be exhibited through a variety of behaviors, which are similar to those displayed by humans. When a dog is sad or depressed, we may not have our normal energy level and, consequently, may lose interest in playing or in our normal activities. We may ignore our favorite toys, be lazy on our walks, and not engage with our humans. Additionally, we may have a decreased appetite and sleep more than normal.
There are a variety of reasons that dogs may experience depression, again just like humans. It may be caused by a change “at home” – moving to a new house, our human getting sick, a member of our family going off to college or moving out, loss of someone close to us, a change in the normal home routine, and the list goes on. Dogs are social animals and these types of changes may alter a dog’s interactions with others.
Depression can be temporary, but if it lingers, a visit to the vet is needed. A check-up will determine if there are any health issues that could be causing withdrawal symptoms, such as pain. A proper diagnosis will help to get us the appropriate treatment.
Life is short, so be happy!
Talk to you soon!
