Talking Tails - 3/6/18

Welcome back to Talking Tails!

Are you ever bored? Don’t worry if your answer is “yes,” because we think all dogs are from time to time. The important thing is what your humans do to alleviate your boredom. They need to understand that we wake up ready to go, needing mental and physical stimulation, but then have to sit around all day while they work. Some of us find ways to amuse ourselves during the day, which do not make our
humans happy. Sorry, but we were bored!

One of the main things that will help us with our boredom is exercise. Taking a daily walk is a great way to reduce boredom. If we go to different areas to walk, that is even better because we expend energy looking and smelling around the new environment. If you are up to, and we are not, running or biking with your human will burn even more energy.

Having play dates or going to doggy day care is not only great fun, but also allows us to release pent-up energy. We went to doggy day care a lot when our Dad was sick and got really tired out. A combination of mental stimulation and physical activity makes the day go by quickly. Joey, acting just like a toddler, ran all day and just dropped on the car ride home. Buster was better at pacing himself, but usually also fell asleep in the car!

Making mealtime more of a task can stimulate our brains and reduce boredom. Using a slow feeder dish, a treat dispensing ball, a Kong, or an interactive bowl challenges us. Joey has a Kong that he works at for hours, slowly getting out his treats. Being younger, Joey is much more prone to boredom than Buster, and the Kong is a miracle worker!

We love our toys and are even more excited when we get new ones! Our grandma bought us a subscription to Bark Box, so we get new toys every month. Super fun! Keeping toys in a box, rather than scattered, helps us to forget about those at the bottom and they seem like brand new when we rediscover them!

Talk to you soon!
Buster and Joey
