Welcome back to Talking Tails!
We are so excited that dog park time is here! Running, playing, greeting, wrestling…the list goes on! It is great to get out of the house and interact with our furry friends.
There are lots of great reasons to go to a dog park. First of all, it is just so wonderful to run and get rid of some of our energy. We see many dogs bigger than us when we go and they must have lots of energy to release! Sometimes we overdo and have to take a nap when we get home…occasionally we doze off in the car on the way home! It is also a great way for us to develop and maintain our social skills. Although we love our mom and dad dearly, we also enjoy spending time with our own kind. The social aspect of going to the park can help dogs overcome fear or aggression. The more they socialize with other dogs, the higher their social comfort level.
Have your mom or dad check out the park for a couple of things before making it your “go-to place.” Be sure the park is big enough to accommodate the dog population. It really isn’t much fun when it gets too crowded. Tensions can sometimes run high and aggressive behavior can occur…we’re talking dogs and humans! A secure fence and gate is a must, however, Buster would let us know if there were any safety issues. Speaking from experience, it is usually a good idea to keep the small dogs in an area separate from the big dogs. Our cousin, Jade, who is about our size, does great in the small dog area, but just freezes in place in the large dog area. So, having two separate areas makes dogs more comfortable. A little bit of shade would be great and access to water…but our mom is good about bringing water with her. If you are a water snob, as is our friend, Murphy, it is best to bring some water because you can build up quite a thirst with hard play.
Have fun and hope to see you at the dog park!
Talk to you soon!
Buster and Joey
