Welcome back to Talking Tails!
The cicadas are here! After 17 years of lying dormant underground, the Brood X cicadas have begun to emerge from the soil. Have you seen them? They can fly and are a bit noisy. That is enough to scare me off!
In some parts of the world, they are considered a delicacy for humans – deep fried or dipped in chocolate. That is not the case for us, my furry four-legged friends.
The good news is that cicadas are not toxic or poisonous, so eating a few is not going to hurt us. On the other hand, eating an excessive number of cicadas may lead to gastrointestinal problems. The cicada shell is hard for us to digest and may irritate our stomach lining. You may experience an upset stomach, vomiting, diarrhea, or lethargy. Worse yet, eating too many could lead to a blockage in the digestive system. Now we are going to have to visit the vet!
If you have an appetite for cicadas, your human should take you outside on a leash, so you can be monitored. In the extreme case where you just cannot control yourself, you may need to be muzzled when going outside. I know, sometimes our cravings just get out of control!
This is a short-lived annoyance, as the cicadas only live for a few weeks, basically to mate and reproduce. The cycle repeats itself and we will see them again in 17 years.
Enjoy, but don’t eat to excess!
Talk to you soon!
Joey
