Talking Tails - Dog Anxiety

Welcome back to Talking Tails!

Do you experience anxiety? Go ahead, there is no shame in admitting you get nervous or stressed out! I get quite anxious during thunderstorms and fireworks and sometimes around other dogs. My cousin, Jade, suffers from separation anxiety.

There are all types of anxieties, which we manifest in a variety of ways. Pacing, trembling, shaking, hyper-vigilance, lip licking, and yawning are some physical behaviors we display when experiencing anxiety. If your humans are like mine, they really try their best to relieve our anxieties. I wear a thunder shirt during rainstorms and ceremonial fireworks, and at times take an anti-anxiety medicine and CBD. Jade listens to music while her mom is at work to relieve her anxiety.

My canine friends have shared a variety of ways they address anxiety. Skippy, my black lab friend, finds that aromatherapy soothes his anxiety. His human, using a spray specially formulated for dogs, applies it along his back. Penny, my cocker spaniel buddy, is calmed when petted by her human. The physical contact is very soothing, and her stress level is reduced. Max, my german shepherd pal, finds that exercise is anxiety-relieving. He and his human take a jog every morning. Buffy, my beagle chum, is
easily stressed and finds that taking a time-out calms her immensely. She needs the quiet space to simply unwind.

I do have a few friends who see a veterinarian to address their anxiety. Their prescription medicine is very helpful and has really changed their lives.

Talk to you soon!
Joey
