Talking Tails - Military Dog Stamps

Welcome back to Talking Tails!

I happened to get a glimpse of a United States Postal Service stamp that honors military working dogs. The one I saw featured a German Shepherd, but other stamps highlight the Labrador Retriever, Belgian Malinois, and Dutch Shepherd breeds. Currently, there are over 2,500 dogs serving alongside handlers from every military service. You go canine friends!

These breeds are strong, athletic, easily trainable, and have an extraordinary sense of smell. Their acute sense of smell, five to ten times stronger than human’s, allows them to detect minute traces of explosives and drugs. Being extremely loyal, they will defend their handlers to the end.

The dogs are born and raised for this type of service. Their training program focuses on obedience and “combat” skills. Being naturally high-strung, their aggressive tendencies align with the responsibilities of “the job.” The dogs create a psychological deterrent, often instilling fear in an attacker greater than that of an armed soldier.

These military dogs are deployed worldwide, working as valued partners in the war against terrorism. They guard military bases, patrol service activities, and detect drugs and explosives. After a dedicated life of service, military working dogs are usually adopted by their handlers or civilians.
We salute you!

Talk to you soon!
Joey
