I really enjoy when grandparents join us for baby’s photo sessions. The grandparent-grandchild relationship is just so special! For moms, an extra pair of helping hands during the photo shoot is always welcomed.
Although my own mom only has grand fur babies, she jokes that caring for little ones has changed so much since she raised me and my sisters. She is right in that as times change, some of the tried and true practices of childcare from 30 years ago have been updated a bit. Grandparents should be aware of the following updates to keep their precious grandchild safe.
- Sleep position – Tummy sleep has been replaced with back sleep. This sleep position reduces the possibility of SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome).
- Loose swaddling – Remember the baby burrito wrap? Today it is believed that tight swaddling can lead to hip dysplasia. Current swaddling techniques leave baby’s legs loose.
- Empty crib – Hold the bumpers, pillow, blankets, and stuffed animals. I know! These are now considered suffocation hazards. So, keep it simple – mattress, crib sheet, and baby. Sleep sacks can be used to keep baby warm.
- Updated baby crib – Since 2011, the federal government has banned the manufacture and sale of drop-side cribs due to infant deaths. Resist the urge to pull out an old crib for your grandchild to use. This may be a tough one because it is sentimental to use your child’s crib for your grandchild.
- Hold the baby powder – Who doesn’t like the smell of baby powder? Unfortunately, it is no longer allowed on the changing table. If inhaled, the tiny powder particles can irritate baby’s delicate breathing passages. A hypoallergenic baby moisturizing lotion is an acceptable substitute.
- Food allergies – Food allergies and sensitivities are on the rise. If your grandchild has doctor or parent feeding instructions, be sure to follow them exactly. Resist the urge to introduce your grandchild to solid food or new foods until mom and dad have given their approval.
What suggestions do you have for new grandparents? Please, share.
