Pumpkins, apple picking, leaves changing colors, cooler temperatures…yep, the signs of fall are slowly appearing! Many of the babies and toddlers have been bringing Halloween costumes for their photo shoots, which is another sign of fall!
Halloween is one of my favorite times ! Here are a few factoids that I have learned over the years. Hope you enjoy them!
- Pumpkins were part of a Celtic custom brought to America by Irish immigrants. October 31, or All Hallows Eve, was the end of the Celtic calendar year. On that night, windowsills were lined with candle-lit hollowed-out gourds to welcome home the spirits of deceased ancestors and to ward off evil spirits.
- Costumes and masks were worn by the ancient Celts on All Hallows Eve to avoid being seen by the evil spirits and ghosts that wandered on that night.
- Trick-or-treating is a modern-day version of the Celtic tradition of leaving food on the doorsteps on All Hallows Eve to keep hungry ghosts from entering their homes.
- The Halloween colors of orange and black represent the fall harvest (orange) and darkness and death (black).
- The most popular Halloween candy is Snickers, with over 2 billion dollars spent on Halloween candy annually.
