We have already welcomed two newborns to our new studio location. Their portrait sessions were amazing!
One of the moms filled me in on how her diet affects her baby, via breast milk. Recognizing all the positive benefits of breastfeeding – providing vitamins and minerals and protection from allergies and illnesses – a primary complication is that certain foods may cause excessive gas for baby.
If your breastfed baby is having digestive issues, you should monitor the types of foods included in your diet to determine if breastfeeding after consuming these foods affects your baby. If so, avoiding these specific foods while nursing will make for a happier baby.
Every baby is different, so what causes gas in one breastfed baby may not affect another baby. In general, however, these are some foods that are more likely than others to cause gas.
- Dairy – Cheese, yogurt, pudding, milk, cream, and ice cream are common dairy products that cause intestinal issues for baby. Dairy items are some of the most colic-causing foods, since approximately 3% of people are allergic to cow’s milk.
- Beans and Nuts – Soy, tofu, peanuts, kidney beans, and pinto beans are the common culprits in this category that can upset baby’s digestive system.
- Vegetables – Broccoli, peppers, cabbage, cauliflower, asparagus, and brussels sprouts, all vegetables that are high in fiber, may cause gas and fussiness in baby. Cooking these vegetables seems to decrease their likelihood of causing intestinal upset in baby.
- Spices – Garlic, cumin, curry, pepper, and red pepper are the common spices that cause intestinal upset for baby.
- Acidic Foods – Tomatoes, strawberries, oranges, lemons, and grapefruit are highly acidic and can cause digestive discomfort for baby.
