Babies and toddlers go through crucial development stages that impact the types and amounts of food eaten over their first three years of life. The following is a general guideline to how your baby’s nutritional needs and behaviors change over time.

By 8 months – Baby begins to show interest in eating – may reach for the spoon or bowl. Be sure to encourage baby!

Between 12 and 24 months – Children usually eat the same food as the rest of the family and may begin to exhibit food preferences. This may explain why your child wants to eat the same food at every meal!

Around 18 months – Toddlers work hard at feeding themselves with a spoon. Plastic-tipped spoons are best for the soft gums of toddlers.

By 24 months – Toddlers begin to develop a better understanding of meal time and may have interactions with others at the dinner table and be more patient if the food is not immediately on their plate!
