Welcome back to Talking Tails!
This hot summer weather is certainly challenging. My mom and I have had to shorten our early morning walks due to the heat. In full disclosure, we even skipped a few!
I have been working on finding ways to stay cool. This is my new mission! You may want to have your human read over your shoulder, as they can certainly play a role in keeping you comfortable in this summer heat.
First thing of major importance is to always have access to water. If you are out and about, your human needs to carry a water bottle or a collapsible bowl. It is surprising how quickly we can experience heat stroke. I am so appreciative of stores and restaurants who put water bowls out for us. If you are a water snob, get real, with this heat, water is water.
If you venture out into the heat, your human needs to provide you with access to shade. A cute beach umbrella, a cool pop-up tent, or even a big tree will allow you to get out of direct sunlight. Fortunately for me, my humans are not big outdoor people when it is hot. I know though that some of you are, as you like to post your beach and picnic pictures to Facebook and Instagram!
If you lounge in the back yard, a sprinkler or a kiddie pool is essential. Some of you enjoy chasing the water and other like to run through it. For a fun treat, have your human add ice cubes to the pool. While you are enjoying this fun, drink a little bit of that water!
Watch those paws! Hot sand and pavement can actually burn our paws. If your human cannot leave their hand on the surface for more than ten seconds, you should not be walking on it. I know the “experts” say that we should wear booties to keep our paws safe, but really, would you wear them? Just stay off those hot surfaces.
Stay cool out there!
Talk to you soon!
Joey
