Welcome back to Talking Tails!
I am discussing a serious topic today in conjunction with July being National Lost Pet Prevention Month. I did spend the first few months of my life on the street, so know how lonely and scary that can be. Granted I was not “lost,” but homeless. I am sure the feelings are the same for both.
Most times we don’t mean to leave home or to become separated from our humans. Some of us may be spooked by loud noises, such as thunder or fireworks. That is me, for sure. Our response may be to slip out of our collar or jump the backyard fence and just run. We truly believe we can outrun the noise. When we come to our senses, we often do not know where we are. Our rural friends often are allowed free range of their property – farm, woods, or large expanses of land. I have a distant cousin, Spike, who
loves to explore their farm. This is all well and good, if he doesn’t wander beyond his familiar range or become stuck in a storm drain or irrigation ditch. Are you a door dasher? You know who you are!! These furry friends are just sure that the “grass is greener” on the other side of the front or back door. In the excitement of making it out the door, we can often get disoriented and not find our way back home.
Of course, our humans are heart broken when we become lost. There are a number of things they can do to protect us from ourselves! The single most important measure is to microchip us. Once this is done, your human must register the chip with current information and make future updates, as needed. Your human can check with your vet or local humane society for this service. Although we all don’t like wearing a collar and identification tags, they greatly assist in our being returned home. For my high-tech friends, your human can use a GPS tracker to always know where you are. For those of you who continue to wander and have not yet learned your lesson, this may be a good option for you!
Be safe, be smart, and stay close to home!
Talk to you soon!
Joey
